Sailing Strategies: A Webquest Created for Young Sailors

Introduction

Basic Intermediate Advanced

Sailing is a skill and an art.  And, in many ways, sailing holds the keys to the future: from an appreciation for “alternative fuels” (wind power) to conservation of nature.  Sailing can serve to inspire the next generation to achieve greatness. On an individual scale, sailing also provides an "understanding of self” as well as an appreciation for the resilience of the human spirit. By creating opportunities for someone to experience sailing, they can have a greater appreciation for what others have done, as well as for what they themselves can do.

Whether you are beginning your exploration of the sailing life, or if you are an experienced sailor and want to brush-up on your skills during the winter months, this webquest is for you.  You will explore sailing via on-line resources, learning the skills and basic information needed to begin sailing in "real-time".

We will start with the basics: safety, parts of a boat, sails, knots, and right-of-way.

Intermediate information includes sail trim, wind shifts, man overboard, and anchoring.

We will then move-on to more advanced information: buoys, chart reading and databases, and creating your own captain's log.

And we will conclude with resources, software, games, videos, blogs, and podcasts that you can continue to explore.

At the end of each section we will issue you a challenge to make sure you are ready to moved on.  So, slip on your dock shoes, grab your sunscreen, and let's sail!
