I am currently interested in recruiting a few good graduate students. They should be ambitious, dedicated to becoming successful research mathematicians. They should have their own interests, the more eclectic the better. They should be open to advice about how to pursue their objectives and not be put off if it turns out that solutions to their problems might require methods with which they are not yet familiar. My primary criterion for agreeing to work with a student is that it should be fun for me, a stimulating experience that inspires me in my own research. If you think you match this description and need an IU thesis adviser, please send me an e-mail to make an appointment to discuss it.
If you're unsure how I might be as an advisor, you might think about asking my former graduate advisees:
I consider my first student to have been Natasa Pavlovic. This is a slightly controversial statement because she was a shared student at UIC with Susan Friedlander. UIC had no formal arrangements for shared students so formally Natasa was strictly Susan's student nevertheless Natasa's CV agrees with my characterization. Natasa is currently tenured at the University of Texas. She was the recipient of a Sloan research fellowship. Her Arxiv postings can be found here. Her Google Scholar footprint can be found here
My second student was Michael Bateman. He is currently at UCLA, partially supported by an NSF postdoctoral fellowship. His Arxiv postings can be found here. His Google Scholar footprint can be found here.
My third student was Chun-Yen Shen. He is currently at McMaster University. His Arxiv postings can be found here. His Google Scholar footprint can be found here.
I am currently working with Andrew Tapay. He has recently passed his Tier 3 oral exam and is beginning his research.
In Spring 2012, I am teaching M 451-551:
Introduction to Mathematical Finance .
In Fall 2011, I taught M365: Introduction
to Probability and Statistics, and
T336: Geometry for Teachers.
I have recently put up a page with odd advice
for undergraduate math majors.
I am on the editorial board of the Indiana University Mathematics Journal.
I am on the editorial board of the Online Journal of Analytic Combinatorics.
Here are some conferences I have attended or will be attending. Maybe I'll see you there.
