- Phenomenology vs. Structuralism
  - WHAT?
    - Different strategies for understanding some kind of cultural phenomenon
    - Ways of looking at things
    - Strategies for understanding the human response
  - WHY?
    - GOAL: To begin to think more richly about design issues
  - PHENOMENOLOGY
    - Try to explore an individual's subjective responsive to an expression
    - Human-Centered
    - How is reality presented to a person?
      - There is an external reality
      - Everyone has a different interpretation of reality
      - No human being has direct access to external reality
      - However, external reality is presented to us via the senses.
      - EXAMPLES:

        Cognitive Science
  - SEMIOLOGY
    - There are codes embedded in artifacts
    - Looks at the artifacts vs. people (as does phenomenology)
      - Looks at objects
    - Language is productive as human understanding
    - Language constructs conscioussness
      - Language structures the way we understand things
