Research Expertise [back to Top] Conversant with quantitative research methods and multivariate data analytic techniques. Skilled in using LISREL for structural equation modeling (SEM), Mplus for multilevel or latent variable modeling, SUDAAN which provides estimates that correctly account for complex design features, HLM for hierarchical linear and nonlinear modeling, STATA primarily for categorical dependent variable models and graphs, SAS, and SPSS. My current research interests include policy and socio-ecological approach in obesity and tobacco and alcohol use behavior with special interest in reducing disparities, improving measurement and evaluation, and understanding the mechanisms by which health behavior is influenced by multiple determinants.

Teaching Expertise [back to Top] Have taught 10 different courses at Indiana University (graduate and undergraduate) including large classes with enrollment up to 140 students. Awarded the Indiana University Trustees Teaching Award four consecutive times in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. Nominated for Indiana University Student Alumni Association’s Student Choice Award (for outstanding teaching) in March 2004, and nominated for Lieber Associate Instructor Teaching Award, Indiana University in November 2003. I developed or revamped completely the following two courses I currently teach regularly: T691 (Multivariate Statistical Analysis): In 2005, I developed a new statistics course for doctoral students while maintaining the same course number, T691, by changing the focus and content of the course from simple correlational techniques to multivariate statistical techniques that are increasingly used across a multitude of disciplines. The topics of the new teaching materials include main concepts and terms for multivariate statistical analyses, debates over null hypothesis statistical tests and their implications for multivariate statistical analyses, matrix algebra, data screening, multiple regression, multivariate analysis of variance and covariance, discriminant function analysis, logistic regression, principal components analysis, and exploratory factor analysis. I developed 6 different complex data sets for students’ data analysis practice, 7 different handouts for explaining step-by-step procedures of each of the major statistical techniques covered in this course, a number of practice questions, PowerPoint teaching materials for all the subjects, 6 different assignments, 2 take-home exams, and 2 in-class exams for students’ better learning. In addition, students are provided a dozen of statistical journal articles to help their understanding of multivariate statistical concepts. In 2006, all the teaching materials were refined and enhanced based on students’ feedback. In 2007, in response to students’ request, I developed material for weekly lab sessions for using statistical package programs including SAS for multivariate statistical techniques. The weekly one-hour statistics lab sessions are offered from Spring 2008 in addition to the 2.5 hours/week regular classroom sessions. T591 (Interpretation of Data in Health, Physical Education, and
Recreation): I revamped T591 course completely in 2004 by incorporating all the fundamental statistical concepts and techniques for graduate students into the course. They include theoretical basis for hypothesis testing and inferential statistics, z test, independent and paired samples t-test, one-way and two-way ANOVA, simple and multiple regression analysis, various types of correlations, and chi-square analysis. I developed PowerPoint teaching materials for all the subjects along with 10 different assignments, a number of practice questions, take-home exam, and 4 in-class exams for students’ better learning. In addition, students are provided several statistical journal articles to help their understanding of statistical concepts.
