| 1. DNA testing and birth mother interview: (done at the same time.) Once the DNA is matched, the US embassy must approve the results. This is known as visa pre-approval. | 1. We were authorized for DNA testing on August 10 and the test was completed on August 11. We received notice on August 20 that it was a match! We visited on September 2-6, 2005! We received pre-approval from the U.S. Embassy on September 14, 2005. |
| 2. Family court: The birth mother is interviewed by a social worker, as is the foster mother, and a report is written. | 2. We entered Family Court on August 2, the interview took place on August 10, and we now have FC approval. |
| 3. PGN: This is where all paperwork for the adoption is reviewed by the Attorney General's office and corrected if necessary. At the end, the new adoption decree is issued and he is legally our son. | 3. We entered PGN on September 21, 2005. We were kicked out on October 11 for a really stupid reason on our POA. We reentered after a long 3 weeks on November 2 and we exited on November 15! |
| 4. Birth Certificate: After PGN is complete a new birth certificate is issued listing us as the parents. | 4. We received a new BC on November 22. |
| 5. Passport: After the birth certificate is issued a passport must be obtained in order for the baby to travel to this country. | 5. We received a new passport on November 23. |
| 6. Pink slip: After the passport the papers go back to the US embassy and they review everything again. Our attorney schedules an appointment with an embassy doctor. The Embassy will issue a "pink slip" saying it is OK for us to come to Guatemala to get our son! | 6. We received the pink slip on December 1. Our Embassy appointment was December 6. |
| 7. Travel: We will fly to Guatemala City and after our visit to the embassy, we all come home! | 7. We returned home in the middle of a snowstorm on December 8, 2005, which just happens to be my birthday. We are now a happy family of four! |

Here is the first website I ever did for a graduate project at AU. Ironic, no? "The Resplendent Quetzal, the brilliant bird found in the cloud forests of Central America, was sacred to the Mayans and figures prominently in their artwork and legends. Today the Quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala, and name to the Guatemalan currency." http://www.american.edu/TED/QUETZAL.HTM |
